Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire you?

I am an expert teacher and writer and have honed my practice over many years. I tutor only what I love: writing and all aspects of the English language. I work with no more than 6–7 clients at a time and am fully invested in their success. Outside of our sessions, I’m always happy to answer questions, provide advice, and lend books. If I’m not the right fit for whatever reason, I will say so and provide referrals if desired.

How long are your sessions?

Sessions generally range between one and two hours. In my experience, 90 minutes, twice or three times a week, is the sweet spot. I work on my own writing in the morning and dedicate afternoons and early evenings to tutoring.

Do you assign homework?

Yes. For every hour of tutoring, you can expect roughly an hour of homework.

Homework is essential to practice learned skills and keep the momentum up between sessions. I create and review homework on my own time and go over it closely and carefully with my students.

How do you take on new clients?

Please send me an email or text message. We’ll schedule a time to talk, in person or by phone, so I can learn about your needs, objectives, and concerns and you can ask questions. If we decide to work together, we’ll come up with a schedule and go from there. I’ll also ask you to send me some of your work – papers, drafts, workplace materials, for example – so I can get a better sense of you and your needs.

What are your rates?

Rates vary with subject, preparation time, and travel time. I provide quotes after speaking with prospective students or their parents. Because I don’t hire other tutors and don’t have advertising expenses (most clients are word of mouth) or other overhead, my rates are generally significantly lower than those at quality New York tutoring companies.

Where do sessions take place?

I work mostly in Manhattan in Brooklyn, holding sessions at client’s homes, at my brownstone in Brooklyn, or at a quiet café or library some place in between. I prefer face to face but also work online using Skype or Zoom.

Can I contact you outside of our sessions?

Yes. Text and email are best, and I’ll get back to you promptly.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give me 24 hours’ notice to cancel or, better, to reschedule a session.

When working with teenagers, how are parents involved?

I expect parents to play a close, active role in the learning process. Up front, I interview parents about their children’s tutoring needs, provide regular updates on their children’s progress, and ask for help in keeping their kids motivated and engaged (and turning in homework on time).
